The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been established in the year 2009, with a sanctioned strength of 60 students for the UG Program. The intake increased to 120 in the year 2012 and further increased to 180 in the year 2013 and remains the same as on date. The branch has established with state of the art facilities / laboratories enabling students learning effectively. The latest software’s like AutoCAD, SOLID WORKS, CATIA, PRO-E, UG, ANSYS, HYPERMESH and MAT LAB are available to train the students and make them industry ready.

Other than academics the students are exposed to advanced topics in mechanical engineering through guest lectures by Industry experts. Periodically Industry visits are also organized for the students to acquaint them with practical knowledge. A technical meet is also organized every year to encourage the students to present their technical capability in the form of technical presentation to kindle their interest in research activities.

The department is catering to the needs of the industry by training students to make valuable contribution. The Department is endeavoring to produce highly trained and capable engineers, who can take up the challenges of the real world. The Department focuses on uncompromising academic standards in imparting both theoretical and practical instructions with a view to prepare professional engineers with high technical acumen.

The CAD/CAM Laboratory has been setup with an objective of catering the needs of students in such a way that they will not only have exposure to the areas of Computer Aided Analysis, CAM etc, but also aid in project development. The processes developed by the SMEC Mechanical Students are recognized nationally and internationally by most reputed government and private organization.

The faculty strives to foster and encourage a teaching methodology that is both practical and theoretical in approach tuning to the requirements of the latest developments in research and industry in the field of mechanical Engineering.

The department has well established laboratories with sophisticated equipment supplementing the academic needs of the students. The lab facilities are being upgraded from time to time, to provide adequate opportunities for the students to learn and innovate. The department is fully equipped with all the labs required for the curriculum and research.

The department is actively engaged in research. The department has been organizing short term training programs, seminars, workshops, guest lectures by experts, technical & non-technical student fests regularly. The department is working for the improvement of Industry – Institute Interaction in terms of academics & research and also for the development of infrastructure to match the needs of the industry. The department is striving hard to attain & sustain as a centre of excellence in Mechanical Engineering education & research with a holistic approach.

The students are encouraged to present papers and to participate in seminars conducted in other engineering colleges/ universities. A variety of academic activities are conducted under the auspices of student’s professional chapters. We subscribe to many SAE & MESA journals apart from subscribing to on-line digital access of all journals.

Educational tours and industrial visits are periodically organized to enhance the practical knowledge of the students and keep them updated with the latest technological applications in various industries to enhance their employability skills.

We have the Alumni Chapter and regular interactions take place with them to get feedback with regard to academics and placements etc. Their suggestions are taken into consideration in various developmental activities of the branch. Many of our alumni are pursuing their higher studies in IITs and reputed universities abroad. A large number of students are placed in reputed Companies every year .

Mechanical Engineering is one of the major activities in the engineering profession and its principles are involved in the design, study, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems. Continued research and development have led to inventing highly sophisticated and user friendly gadgets and processes helping the mankind.
